Anjeer Halwa

Main Ingredients

For Anjeer Halwa:

  • 1 cup dried Anjeer (figs)
  • 1/2 cup mixed nuts (cashews, almonds, pistachios – roughly chopped)
  • 3 tablespoons ghee
  • 1/2 cup milk (or as needed)
  • 1/4 cup khoya (mawa – optional, for richness)
  • 1/4 cup sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • A few saffron strands (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon chopped dates or raisins (optional for added sweetness)

Instruction

Step 1 - Prepare the Figs

  • Soak the figs:

Soak dried anjeer in warm water for about 30 minutes to soften them.

  • Blend into a paste: Once soft, drain and blend the anjeer into a coarse paste using a little milk if needed. The paste should be thick and not too watery.

Step 2 - Cook the Halwa Base

  • Heat ghee: In a heavy-bottomed kadai or non-stick pan, heat 2 tablespoons of ghee.

  • Sauté nuts: Add chopped nuts and sauté until golden. Remove and set aside for garnish.

  • Add fig paste: In the same pan, add the fig paste and cook on medium heat for 8-10 minutes, stirring continuously to avoid sticking.

Step 3: Build the Flavor

  • Add milk and khoya: Add milk and khoya: Add milk and crumble in the khoya (if using). Mix well and cook until the mixture thickens and starts leaving the sides of the pan.

  • Sweeten it: Add sugar and stir until it melts and blends in. The halwa will become glossy as it absorbs the sugar.

  • Flavor boost: Add cardamom powder, saffron strands, and a spoon of ghee. Mix well.

Step 4: Garnish and Serve

  • Garnish: Top with the roasted nuts and some extra chopped figs or raisins if desired.

  • Serving Suggestions: Serve warm as a dessert after meals or during festivals. It also pairs well with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a fusion twist.

Tips for the Perfect Anjeer Halwa

  • Natural Sweetness: Anjeer is naturally sweet, so you can skip sugar or use jaggery as a healthier alternative.

  • Texture Matters: Blend figs coarsely for a more traditional halwa texture. For a smoother finish, puree them well.

  • Make it Richer: Add more khoya or a spoonful of condensed milk for a creamier consistency.

Why You’ll Love Anjeer Halwa:

  • Naturally Sweet: No refined sugar needed if you like it healthy!

  • Festive & Flavorful: Perfect for celebrations and special occasions.

  • Nutritious: Packed with fiber, iron, and the goodness of dry fruits.
